First of all, determine how you can afford on spending for the ring. Most people use the rule of the two months’ salary. This means that the ring should cost the equivalent of two months of your current salary. Because you also have other bills to pay, saving up this amount of money may take quite a bit of time. You can also consider financing. Simply go to your favorite jeweler and tell them that you need to buy an engagement ring, and that financing will be
needed. Go ahead and get the credit check out of the way, find out what your payments will be, and how much of a down payment is needed.
Now, have your mother, sister, or your girlfriend’s best friend take your girlfriend to the mall, and make sure that they take a look at the engagement rings to get an idea of what she might like. Having a close friend or relative guiding you through this experience can be invaluable and can mean the difference between a bad and a good ring. And you can't afford to go wrong with this. However, make sure that the jewelry store you purchase the ring from allows you to return the it, if that is required, or allow your future wife to exchange it for another one if she isn’t pleased with the ring!
Finally, when everything is settled and your girlfriend likes the ring, there is one more step to take that often people forget about: insuring the ring. This can be a very wise action to take because you would be stunned about the great number of ways in which one could lose the engagement ring. And if it happens, you must be insured. Make sure you know exactly what your engagement ring insurance policy covers and most of all, make sure that you protect your precious diamond ring at all costs!
