Before you begin renovating your roof and installing cheaper, more energy efficient, or more durable shingles, there are a number of factors worth considering if you want to receive the most bang for your buck. Even if you have already made the wise decision to use composite roofing over more traditional materials, your job is not over. Not only must you decide which durable composite roofing materials to choose, but you must also determine who exactly will handle the installation.
Which Composite Roofing Material Do You Choose?
Composite roofing takes its name because it is a synthesis of two or more durable materials such as asphalt, fiberglass, tar, or asbestos. These composites are further categorized by their thickness, with strip shingles being the thinnest, laminated shingles being higher on the food chain, and triple-layered (or premium) laminated shingles offering the most protection. Because all three types can be manufactured to imitate whatever look and feel you want, pricing is usually the main determinant homeowners use when selecting durable composite roofing materials. If you live in an area with heavy precipitation or falling debris, thicker (and thus more expensive) composite roofing is usually better.
Who Will Install Your Composite Roofing?
Roofing is not terribly difficult to remove and install if you have the right tools. In fact, many homeowners take great pleasure in renovating their roofs. However, professional contractors offer two key benefits not necessarily available to the do-it-yourself crowd. For starters, they can usually complete the project more quickly than typical homeowners. This is especially important if repairs need to be made quickly, like after a damaging rainstorm. In addition, contractors can offer warranties of up to fifty years depending on the material selected. Given the speed and durability of professional installation, it probably makes sense to go with a contractor unless you are feeling particularly adventurous. However, be sure to shop around and obtain written estimates. Different contractors offer different levels of quality.
There are websites that make this quality search a little easier. Certain websites will be able to offer prescreened roofing contractors who have been through an experience, license and insurance check. However, even if the website states that they have done this investigation on the contractor before referring you to them, you still want to make sure that you compare at least three composite roofing estimates. This way you will be able to better judge the level of professionalism of each company.
