How to Choose the Right Mobility Scooter

How to Choose the Right Mobility Scooter

If you suffer from limited mobility, and you are not quite ready to give up your independence, then an adult mobility scooter may be exactly what you need. Adult mobility scooters are designed to give you more independence and freedom to go where you want or need, without a wheelchair or the help of others. Many people who suffer from arthritis, age, accidents, or illnesses are using mobility scooters for grocery shopping, mall shopping, trips to the zoo, and many other small trips that they would otherwise be unable to do independently.

Adult mobility scooters have seen a dramatic increase in style and technology since their introduction in 1968. They are now available in fold-up portable models for easier traveling. You also have the choice of front wheel drive or rear wheel drive. Front wheel drive scooters are typically smaller and are most recommended for indoor use. The weight capacity on front wheel drive scooters is normally around 250 pounds, depending on the manufacturer. Rear wheel drive scooters are for indoor and outdoor use, and the weight capacity is more around 350 pounds, again depending on the manufacturer.

Gas powered mobility scooters, although still available, have all but been replaced by electric versions of the scooter. Electric adult mobility scooters are, for one, easier financially, especially with the price of gas in such an unsteady mode. Electric scooters are powered by a battery, although some larger models take two batteries, and can be re-charged with a charger unit, either on the scooter or off. You also have the option to charge it from an electrical outlet via an AC adapter. This ease of charging has also been a deciding factor for most who choose to purchase an electric scooter over a gas powered one.

When deciding on which mobility scooter to use, price is usually always a factor. You should research the different manufacturers to determine pricing differences. Also, check for quality in the scooters. While adult mobility scooters are not inexpensive, they are affordable, and, of course, having the freedom and independence to go places that you could otherwise not go is considered priceless.
