Learn to Play the Guitar

Have you ever dreamed of playing the guitar? Do you picture yourself plucking the strings to play the most beautiful, challenging music? Why aren't you? If you don't know how to play the guitar, there is no reason why you can't start now. The guitar is actually a very easy instrument to start out with. Plus, it's portable, so you can bring it and play it anywhere you want.

First, you need to get a guitar. If you are lucky enough to get one as a gift, good for you. If you know someone that will let you borrow theirs, that's great too, but unlikely, and eventually, you will want your own. Guitar center offers a large variety of guitars at affordable prices. You can buy a $100 guitar for the beginner, or you can get a thousand dollar Gibson, if that's what floats your boat. Either way, you will need a guitar in order to play a guitar. You can either get an electric guitar or acoustic guitar, although, I would recommend getting an acoustic to start. If you want to start a band with electric guitars, then get an electric. You know what will work best for you.

Next, you will need to decide if you are going to take lessons or teach yourself. If money is no problem, lessons are the way to go. If you aren't looking to spend a fortune, you should go the teach yourself route. If you are unsure of your musical self-teaching skills, you can always get lessons for a couple of months and then continue by yourself.

Learning to play the guitar is actually quite easy and shouldn't be hard to teach yourself. Once you have your guitar, get a good teach yourself book, preferably DVD. With a beginner DVD, you can learn correct fingering, how to tune your guitar, and where you should start. Get a book of exercises and spend a few minutes every day practicing them to improve the strength of your fingers and your agility.

You can start learning chords to strum. This is a great place to start because you can start playing songs right away. Even if you just know a few chords, you can start playing some songs that sound hard but are actually easy. Once you know the chords, you can move onto more difficult songs with single notes. Just keep practicing and you will become the great guitarist you always wanted to be!
