Obesity Treatment Tips

Obesity is an excess proportion of total body fat. It is increased to a point where it is associated with certain health conditions or increased mortality. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. A person is considered obese when his or her weight is 20% or more above normal weight. The weight may come from muscle, bone, fat and/or body water. The human body can handle carrying some extra fat, but beyond a certain point, body fat can begin to interfere with your health. For this reason, obesity is more than a cosmetic concern. Obesity puts you at greater risk of developing high blood pressure, diabetes.

In Ayurveda, obesity is known as Medo Roga. It is simply defined as the condition in which excessive amount of fat is accumulated in the body. There are two main reasons for this abnormal deposition of fat - (i) excessive fat intake through the diet and (ii) some metabolic problem which does not allow the proper utilization of fat in the body. Ayurveda holds agni, or the digestivefire, responsible for obesity. When the agni is vitiated, then the ama (toxic substances) is built up in the body, leading to obesity.

Obesity and its related diseases are more prevalent among groups with low socioeconomic status. Obesity results from an excess of energy (caloric) intake over expenditure. Obesity can have a number of causes, including thyroid problems and lack of exercise. Obesity and overweight are chronic conditions. Overall there are a variety of factors that play a role in obesity. Obesity can run in families, but just how much is due to genes is hard to determine. Many others factors have contributed to the increasing rates of overweight and obesity. Changes in society, work and leisure have affected activity and eating patterns, leading to a rise in overweight and obesity. Men have a higher resting metabolic rate (meaning they burn more energy at rest) than women, so men require more calories to maintain their body weight. Many families eat the same foods, have the same habits (like snacking in front of the TV), and tend to think alike when it comes to weight issues (like urging children to eat a lot at dinner so they can grow "big and strong"). All of these situations can contribute to weight gain, so it can be difficult to figure out if a person is born with a tendency to be obese or overweight or learns eating and exercise habits that lead to weight gain. The average American is inundated with fast food, processed food, and enriched food choices on a daily basis. Advertisements for these food products boast their nutrition values and ease of preparation can make our lives easier. We lead busy lives, eat fast, and choose television or computer over exercise.

Diet composition can play a role in obesity treatment because it can influence energy intake and nutrient balance. Taking diet pills for obesity treatment has gradually become the trend in recent times. One effective way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories. For most adults, a low-calorie diet of 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day for women and 1,500 to 1,800 calories per day for men is recommended for weight loss. Choose healthy foods. Healthy foods include vegetables, fruits, grains and lean sources of protein, including beans, fish, low-fat dairy products and lean meats. These foods optimize nutrition and taste and promote a healthy weight.
