Puerto Pollensa in Majorca

Puerto Pollensa in Majorca

Majorca is the largest island of Spain. The holiday resort of Puerto Pollensa is on the north west coast of the island, about 58km, (about a 1.5 hour drive) from the capital Palma and the Son Sant Joan Airport. If you are travelling by taxi from the airport the trip will cost you around 65euros.

Puerto Pollensa has a delightful setting and a friendly atmosphere which helps to make it a firm favourite holiday destination with many visitors choosing to return again and again.

The bay of Pollensa is home to lots of wonderful luxury yachts, and an assortment of colourful local fishing boats. The area holds a number of small natural beaches, as well as the main one which has been artificially extended.

The shallow waters of the bay make it very popular with families who have small children. Through the summer months, the region has lots of good bars and pavement cafes to choose from, a lot of these however close between October and March when there are less tourists around.

Puerto Pollensa is surrounded and sheltered by the dramatic Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range. If you enjoy walking, there are lots of walks into the hills where you can enjoy stunning views out over the bay and surrounding seas. It is important however to note that unless you are an experienced walker, if you are planning on going up into the mountains, it is worth while to find a local guide who can make sure you have the right equipment with you and show you the way.

There are guidebooks to Mallorca which can tell you about some of the gentler walks that are suitable for the less experienced.

Puerto Pollensa has been a holiday resort since the 1920's and there are some hotels on the sea front that retain a fairly old fashioned air having been built before the boom. There are also larger hotels built more recently which have some activities programmes provided, although this resort is not as full of activity as the popular south coast resorts, and you won't find water parks here.

This does mean that you can enjoy a more gentle holiday, and the area is more popular with those who are looking for a relaxed and slightly sleepy atmosphere.

The area has one well established disco called Chivas which opened back in 1969, but mostly the evening entertainment in this area is hotel based, and it's not a place to go if you're looking for loud music and non-stop partying. Evenings here, you are more likely to find people sitting in a pavement café, or taking a stroll along the beaches to the harbour and back.
