Recruitment consultants and CV blunders

Recruitment consultants and CV blunders

Even given this, it's amazing how many people applying for recruitment consultants jobs make the same basic errors on their Cvs. Her are some of the most common blunders.

Spelling mistakes. Given that computers normally put a dirty great rd line under spelling errors it is amazing how some people submit CVs for recruitment consultants jobs with pages full of basic spelling errors. It's difficult to find any reason other than the obvious ones of 'rushed' or 'poor attention to detail' both of which don't bode well for the job! Always use the spell check facility on your machine and proof read it yourself. In addition, get someone else to proof read it. Remember, new jobs are life changing, so it that matters to you, pay a little extra attention to getting it right.

Using block capitals. It's another surprisingly common one. If this is you, take a couple of paragraphs or ordinary text, then type it out again in block capitals and compare. You should see that the block capitals not only doesn't look right, it's actually very difficult to read. Given that recruitment consultants give a CV maybe 10 seconds to decide whether to five it an extra 2 minutes, a CV in block capitals is likely to fail at the first hurdle. Remember, capitals at the beginning of sentences, and for names etc..not for all text. If you are not convinced, pick up any book of magazine and it's never block capitals...for a reason!

Too long. If you have a recruitment consultants career behind you, going into detail of every jobs you have had over 6 pages is probably not necessary and too much to read. Personally, I would like to see a little detail from the last 2 roles, but further back, just a top line description of what you've done and how good you were. If it's too long, you run the risk of the reader not reading all, then it's just luck whether they read the best bits!

Too short. The most common mistake here is to provide a 1 page CV. In America, the standard Resume is one page, it's what they do, but in the UK, one page is just not enough detail. Aim for 2 to 3 pages in the UK, with more detail applied to your recent roles.

Wrong order. Given that your CV may only get 10 seconds of recruitment consultants time to determine whether it gets a further 2 minutes, make sure that the first things they read are impactful. Name, address, age and mobile number just won't differentiate you from others. Start with relevant stuff, for example current employment. Recruitment consultants want to know that you have relevant experience, so put your most recent role at the top and make sure achievements jump off the page! Leave your address and the boring stuff to the end.

There is, of course, and endless list of CV mistakes people make which submitting their CVs for recruitment consultants roles. Most of these above are needless but for a little extra time, care and thought.
