The capital and largest city in Spain, Madrid is located in the the geographical heart of the country. The population of the city is 3,120,732 (1990) and that of the metropolitan area is 4,650,000 (1988 est.). Covering 531 sq km (205 sq mi), Madrid lies at an elevation of about 640 m (2,100 ft). During the 16th century the former Moorish fortress was chosen as the capital because of its Central position within the Iberian Peninsula.
